Malaysia: An Islamic State?
Secularism and Theocracy: A Study of the Malaysian Constitution
Edited by Abdul Razak Baginda / Peter Schier

Whether Malaysia is an Islamic state is a contentious issue. What constitutes an Islamic state? What are the criteria, if any, that mark an Islamic state as such? What does the Malaysian Constitution have to say about Malaysia being an Islamic state?

These are just some of the issues raised within the framework of a discourse on the status of Malaysia as an Islamic state. Given the wide-ranging ramifications for every citizen in multicultural, multireligious Malaysia with the emergence of this debate, it is imperative that the issue be accorded its due recognition. This book hopes to offer another perspective on this important issue and contribute towards the understanding of Islamic identity and multiculturalism in Malaysia .
