While
the whole world prepares itself for a new millennium that will be
characterised by the trends of globalisation and regionalisation,
Cambodia a new chapter in its long history. For Cambodia, this will
be a new era of reform and opening up and integration into the regional
and global economics. This will no doubt determine the course of
Cambodia's future development.
Joining
Asean is considered one of Cambodia's top priorities. Cambodia expects
that the regional economic integration will generate positive externalities
critical for stimulating its national economic development. Nevertheless,
we are conscious of the fact that Asean membership will bring about
many challenges for Cambodia. Thus, the key issue for Cambodia is
to be well prepared, especially in terms of developing clearly defined
policies, strategies and plans of action.
This
book addresses issues concerning the Asean Free Trade Area and the
Asean Investment Area which are expected to have significant impact
on the Cambodia's national economy and thus are the economic cornerstones
for Cambodia's preparation for Asean entry. Since the current financial
crisis in Southeast and East Asia is causing severe repercussions
both at the regional and global level, its impact on the Cambodian
economy will be an ongoing issue throughout this book.
