to the European Union, Asean is perhaps the most successful regional
grouping in the world. Established 30 years ago, it has transformed
a contentious sub region of diverse peoples, political and economic
systems, religions and cultures into one of increasing peace and
prosperity.
Asean
Towards 2020 examines how the regional organisation can meet the
challenges of the next 30 years. It seeks to draw lessons from Asean's
past years. It dwells on the strategic goals and critical pathways
for Asean in the years ahead; the challenge of building an even
more peaceful and united Asean community; institutional building;
and Asean's new political, security, economic and social agendas,
and its relations with the wider region and the world. Already making
an impact on the global political and economic arenas, a better
empowered Asean will undoubtedly assume a larger international role
in the next century.
