ASEAN MACROECONOMIC OUTLOOK 1997-1998

   This is the third Asean Macroeconomic Outlook (AMO) that the Asean Secretariat has published. This third Outlook is different and special in a number of ways. First, it is now under the stewardship of the Asean Finance Ministries. Hence this edition has been written with the support of experts from the Finance Ministries and central banks of Member Countries.

   Second, the Outlook has been enlarged to cover all nine Asean Member Countries. Previous Outlooks provided updates, descriptions and forecasts only for the Asean 6: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The expansion of Asean to include transition economies Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar has added another dimension to the macroeconomic picture.

   Third, the Outlook is unique in collecting in one volume an unparalleled wealth of macroeconomic information on all the nine Member Countries.

   Fourth, with the currency turbulence swirling around the region, the
macroeconomic prospects for this year as well as for 1998 hold tremendous interest
for everybody. This Outlook also provides a thoughtful appraisal of the likely effects of the Asian financial turmoil.
